Last Monday at Rio is an evening of live poetry and spoken word at the free and funky venue which is the Rio cafe, Partick, Glasgow. Some of the finest poets writing today have read and reflected, ranted and roared from the stage we offer on the last Monday of every month. Rab Wilson, for instance, Jim Carruth, Claudia Daventry, slam-champ Graeme Hawley, Tim Turnbull, Milton Balgoni, Jenny Lindsay, Tawona Sithole and Kevin Cadwallender. Due in the coming months are Fiona Lindsay, Jo Bell and Donny O'Rourke. The atmosphere is special. Easy-going for a friendly night out - all ears when the poets are speaking. Along with the headline acts there are seven open mic spots which may be taken by complete beginners trying out their tonsils or by experienced poets offering their latest work to an audience which carries on the great Glasgow tradition of letting performers know exactly what they think of them. Gasps of wonder, cheers of delight and even the odd grumble of dissent are the order of the evening. Cairns is your compere.
